As does Ian Stewart! Ian built his National Champion Mini Cooper with the best of the best. Ian needed the best suspension money could buy BUT he needed it to fulfill the rules of NASA's Time Trial classes which have point values on adjustments and dollar amounts. Accrue too many points and you're in the next fastest class. Naturally we suggested AST 5100s which use the same competition parts as our 5200 two way remotes and 5300 triple adjustable shocks at a lower price point. Ian proved that good driving and single adjustable shocks can (and do) win at the national level. You don't have to "break the bank" to win. Stewart set out to break the track record in NASA's TTC class running a 2:33.2 in 105 degree heat this past weekend. The previous record was 2:35.7. Ian wasn't happy with the record so the next morning he went out and ran a 2:32.1 beating the record by 3.6 seconds! Great job Ian!

If there was a track that required good dampers it is Sebring. Known as one of the bumpiest tracks in the U.S., Sebring has long been a torture test for race cars. Ian makes it look easy with this lap. When we first started working with Ian, he wanted a high performance shock without the sky high prices of double and triple adjustable shocks. The 5100 was a perfect trade off in performance and value using competition level components in a single adjustable (non remote) shock. He's quoted as saying they work better than "any $7,000 shock I've driven on at less than half the price." Thanks again to Ian for showing off what a great driver on great shocks can do.

Aaron Leichty beats TTC track record by 3 seconds on AST 4100s!

Aaron Leichty, one of our first Honda S2000 testers, beat the Putnum Park track record this weekend by THREE seconds. The 325i was built specifically to compete in NASA GTS 2, SCCA ITR, and BMW Club Racing Prepared class. The "do it all" car came out fighting last weekend at VIR. Due to an issue with qualifying run groups, RRT's Barry Battle was forced to start in the back. Their forum has a video of the 10 lap race where Barry passes the entire field in the first 3 laps and then puts 40 seconds on 2nd place by the checkered flag. The car looks hooked up once he gets through the crowd. We think that must be a combination of driver and suspension since the car has the originally 200k mile motor in it! Great run Barry!

http://www.rrtracing.com/forum/viewt...345&p=738#p738

AST Suspension - There was nothing but positive comments on them.

There will be several videos recorded from the booth we'll link here soon.

Update on new models

We are currently testing the following new models:

NA/NB and NC Miata MX-5 4100 coilovers

2005+ Mustang 4150 coilovers

2008+ Evo X coilovers

C5/C6 coilovers

VW Mark V GTI

More details here.

AST Suspension at PRI December 11-13th

Come visit us at the Performance Racing Industry tradeshow December 11-13th. First off, NASA announced that next year’s Championship will be at Miller Motorsport Park near Salt Lake City, UT. That’s only 1400 miles for us in Dallas, Texas. The event started out a soggy one. Most TT drivers didn’t bother running on the wet days since the best lap counts. But luckily, things started looking great Saturday and Sunday. The track dried Saturday and afternoon run groups had a clean, dry track. Conditions stayed good through Sunday as well if not for a little WIND. Can you say Ike? Yes, even Ohio is not immune to tropical depression winds. I saw more than one canopy go into retirement for this race season.

AST customers sponsored by Elephant Motorsports and Matthew’s Auto Sales brought the hardware to Mid Ohio in the form of AST 4200s and 4300s mainly in the GTS category. Special thanks to the crew at RRT for letting AST hang out at the compound as well. RRT is in the process of building a GTS/ITR/J Prepared car using AST 4200s. The car debuts next season.

In the end, Scott Berkowitz took home GTS 3 in a BMW M3 running the Vorshlag/AST 4200 suspension kit. Scott beat most of the field including GTS 4 and 5 cars (faster cars) finishing 5th overall in a field of 47! Shea Burns, John Van Houten, B.J. Farmer as well as Vorshlag customers Andy Watts and Barry Battle running Vorshlag camber plates all gave it their all this week. Andy took the GTS 5 win and overall GTS category win. Congrats to Andy! RRT brought several cars to the event with top finishes running Vorshlag parts.

Thanks to all our customers who took the chance on a new product and showed the competition what we can do.

We'll be attending the Texas Region NASA event at Eagle's Canyon with the Alpha car and our new Evo X in TTB.

As I write this, Terry and Amy have finished their first practice day at SCCA Solo2 Nationals. Terry was running strong in XP with our 4300 shocks while Amy was hanging with the STS Open top drivers in our 318is with custom 4300 shocks. Both cars are handling extremely well. Other AST cars at Topeka include an A Stock WRX STI, a DSP Impreza 2.5 RS, a STX E36, a STU WRX STI, and an XP Miata (our first Miata application). We’ll provide more of an update later this week. Surely this can't be done? But what if it could? What if you could daily drive your autocross car, your track day/time trial car, AND have it be spouse and family friendly? No, that is definitely crazy!

Sure, most of us can get by. We can make sacrifices. Heck, I drove a '07 STI around town with a side pipe and no muffler all for the "sake of winning". The downside? Well, no one would drive with me, but sometimes that's good. Hey, it was light! We've all driven cars with 750 lb/in springs and twin tube shocks on the street because we couldn't afford a truck and trailer. No it doesn't ride THAT bad...does it? We've pulled the A/C out of cars in Texas to drop 30 pounds before a big event. The list goes on and on. You know who you are.

In this time of high fuel costs and tightening spending, we believe the trend of multipurpose cars will become more and more important. With gas over $4 per gallon in some places, you begin to feel the crunch when you tow a car 1400 miles to an event. When the pump shuts off at $100 and you haven't finished filling up you begin to ponder, is there a better way? I don't think as "car guys" we're about to roll over and pick a new hobby. Sure, basket weaving is relaxing, but nothing compares to wide open throttle acceleration or making yourself keep your foot down through a 100 mph corner hoping it sticks this time. No, not many hobbies compare to cars. We want to have our cake and eat it too.

So, if we could find this "car nirvana", what would it be? What would it look like and what classes could it run in? What are some nice to haves? Lists are subjective, but we had some ideas. It needs to be a smaller displacement motor so probably turbocharged. It needs to have 4 doors, gotta carry people too. All wheel drive could be nice, how many times do you lose in the rain? It happens when you bring a two wheel drive car to the event ask me. One problem though, we LIKE the way rear wheel drive cars handle. Of course we want to make parts for it so it has to have a little "left on the table" from the factory to improve on. It needs to run on street tires. Forget towing a tire trailer and changing tires at the track. We're lazy and 18" race tires have gone from pricey to astronomically pricey!

That starts the conversation and narrows it quickly in our minds. Street tires - SCCA autocross has some very nice street tire based classsing structures. We're familiar with that. NASA TT has some nice classing as well that accounts for treadwear. A plan wouldn't be complete without hoping to run One Lap of America and a return trip to the GRM Ultimate Track Car Challenge to boot! Don't forget Redline Time Attack and Super Lap Battle. All possibilities.

Again, this may be subjective, but we think we've found a car that can check all our boxes. Friday we headed over to Don Herring Mitsubishi in Irving, TX and test drove some Evos. By Tuesday the next week, we picked up our 2008 Mitsubishi Evolution X MR in Wicked White as they say. You might say, "yikes, but you didn't factor in price tag?" Yes, the price of entry into the Evo is a little steep, bordering BMW levels. But if you step back and look at the package (and magazine articles) the Evo is a relative bargin to the cars it gets compared against. All the major magazines have done "track car" articles and the Evo is coming close to cars that start at $25,000 MORE than the Evo. It has brakes, power, suspension, and again, checks off our wants and desires. Better yet, it leaves room for improvement on suspension and power! But what about fuel mileage? More on that later. We plan to improve the abysmal mileage the Evo eeks out.

In short, we'll be combining the strength of Vorshlag and AST along with a few key partners to build what we feel is the Ultimate Dual Purpose Car, Project UDP. Short term planned mods include Vorshlag camber plates, AST 4200 coilovers, turbo back exhaust, and ECU tuning by Cobb Tuning. Stayed tuned for more!

Ready for stickers....

Greetings from the AST cell phone!

AST Suspension to race in 24 Hours of Dubai

The race season kicks off this year on January 10th in Dubai with the third annual 24 Hours of Dubai. Over eighty race teams from around the world converge at the Dubai Autodrome circuit. AST Suspension not only is a sponsor of the event, but will be represented by the Creventic BV team running the first ever endurance prepped Audi R8, called the CR-8. The complete story can be found here.

AST developed a suspension setup based off the highly successful Competition model found in its current line up. Creventic BV will be building turn-key endurance race cars using AST's triple adjustable race suspension. This same suspension is available for popular Japanese, European, and American sports cars. Let's hope the shocks do too! We had a great time meeting old friends, new friends and having a great time outside the show too. We'll do a more detailed update later, but it was a great launch for AST in the States. Special thanks to AST BV for coming over from Holland and helping with the show.

We had some very influential industry specialists coming by to see the products and sending still others by to see the products as well. They were very complimentary of the product quality and the innovation that our new double adjustables have with the TPDA valving for compression adjustment. We'll clean it up a bit.

This is the AST 4200 double adjustable damper on the shock dyno. The 4200 is based on AST's Twin Piston Dual Adjust (TPDA) technology. Simply put, TPDA moves the external reservoir into the base of the shock. The lower piston you see acts as the bleeder valve that a normal external res shock would have at the top of the reservoir. This controls the pressure put on the floating piston. With the valve open, the floating piston does its job and moves up and down as the shock runs through its stroke. The compression piston is stationary with relation to the body of the shock. As you change the adjustment for compression, the pressure increases in the main body of the shock and creates more compression damping.

This particular shock is using the red synthetic oil designed for viscosity stability in endurance racing. Plus it shows off really well for the video. We can build or rebuild shocks with this fluid for special applications. This technology is proven and has been used over the years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vDiDUpQHfY

We have the AST 4200s in stock for BMW E36. Applications for E46 and other models can be specially ordered at this time; We will begin to stock as many models as possible. Of course "eye to eye" style shocks are easily done (see pictures below). E30 front 4200 doubles always present a challenge since we need the uprights to build them. Anything is possible, though.

Brian

Back from SCCA Nationals and BMW O'Fest!

Well, we made it back in one piece from our trips. Back to business as usual. Amy Fair brought home a National Championship with the AST sponsored E36 M3. This car runs our new 4200 design. Way to go Amy! Our guys didn't fare too well this year. We had hoped for better results, but late August testing gave us some things to worry about. Unfortunately we took some gambles that didn't pay off. That's racing as the say!

BMW Oktober Fest was a blast. We ran the new LS1 powered E36 at the Day 1 and 2 autocrosses. This car has 4100 shocks on it at this time. It brought how top time of day by 6 seconds on Monday and TToD by 4 seconds on Tuesday. Good job!

We're running full speed ahead for the PRI show. We'll be in booth #1407. AST (Holland) will be coming as well to help with the booth. Stop by to meet some of the brightest minds in the damper business. We'll be showing off our latest designs. More to come.

Brian

AST USA Update!

Greetings,
Just a few things going on. September 25th through October 2nd we'll be out of the office attending SCCA Solo Nationals then running back to Texas for BMW O'fest. If you're at either of these events, come find us. We should be around! We're bringing a Subaru WRX STI, Evo IX, and a BMW E36 M3 to the SCCA Solo Nationals. We've got AST 4100, 4200 and 4300 dampers represented on these cars.

We'll have the LS1 powered E36 318is out at O'fest running AST 4100s. Hopefully they won't kick us out for our non-BMW motor swap. :) This is the soon to be "track day" monster. Most folks that ride in it say they had "a religious experience" when they get out. 750 pound springs and the ASTs soak it up like nothing!

Several product projects are going on as well. We're working with some top customers on an enduro version of the 4200s, 4300 coilover rear E30 M3 shocks and various STI and Mini Cooper updates. E30 non M coilovers are being tested soon.

Reviews from new customers continue to come in. Customers are going faster at the track than they were before they installed their ASTs. That's the way we like it.

Thanks,
Brian

Testing on the 4200 series

Testing on the new 4200 series shock is complete!
